The water signs which represent emotions(cancer, Pisces , & scorpio)
The earth signs represent practicality ( capricorn,taurus and virgo)
the air signs represent intellect ( aquarius ,libra and gemini)

usually each sign is compatible with its own group...moreover, water signs are compatible with earthsigns....and air signs are compatible with fire signs.

u have to know that sunsigns are merely an out line for the character...many other things shapes it . the most important are the ascendant and the moon sign. there are many websites that can help u draw a natal chart. try www.astro.com.
as for books...the best books are for Linda Goodman " sunsigns" and " love signs" .they will help u alot if u r interested in astrology.

As for compatibility...sunsigns just help u understand characters in front of you...well.. I am a water sign and my bf is an air sign...and most of my friends are air and fire signs. so if feel something for someone...just go for it.

I only know 2 - Leo is a fire sign, and Scorpio is a water sign. No compatibility with one of the same exact sign as you are. Aries, Libra and Sagittarius compatible with Leos; Cancer and Virgo best for Scorpios.
