"The Aquariums of Pyongyang" by Kang Chol-Hwan.
It's about a survivors true story about how he and his family were sent to the North Korean concentration camp Yodok and his life there and the utter horrors his family faced and how he eventually escaped via China to the South where he lives now. This isn't an old book either and it gives the reader a pretty good idea about what happens in North Korea today.

Probably Cold Blood, by Truman Capote.
As to those who say it was the Bible, no disrespect intended, but that book is not a story so much as a collection of allegories and fables, whether or not based on true characters or happenings.
