A set of electric shockwaves through the brain.

It's done under anesthetic, although there are horror stories about clinics that don't bother.

It's only used for extreme depression these days. Some people say its barbaric and should be banned, other say it's a life saver.

Some psychiatry doctors refuse to administer it. For others it's their favourite prescription.

Its something they rarely ever should do, as a last ditch effort to treat depression.

Electric shock is used to cause convulsions. It can cause memory loss.

There is a fundamental corruption in the mental health system in the United States, so some people who are placed in a state facility can be tortured using this technique.

If you don't believe it, well that is because the practice is a useful tool by the powerholders and therefore is not reported in the media.

Electric shock treatment is used for depressives or manic-depressives. As a treatment it is not based on any scientific theory. All that is know about it is that it sometimes works. It is not often used nowadays.
As someone just mentioned it can cause memory loss. In fact immediately after treatment there can be complete memory loss. This does pass.
However, whichever way you look at it, it is a thoroughly unpleasant experience.
