I dont use pestersides now and when aphids are attacking new shoots I let nature take its course and within a couple of weeks Ladybirds and their lavae (which incedently look nothing like a ladybird but maybe like a small dragonfly lavae) gobble them up. I now cant move for ladybirds, want some?

You can get ladybird (ladybug) eggs from garden stores, especially over the Internet. Just dump them into the bushes in your garden, in the spring, and they'll hatch into a fine population of ladybugs.

Don't cut everything back in the winter. Leave plenty of dead stalks on your plants (the sort that are hollow inside) Ladybirds love to over winter in these and dead wood. Tidy them up in very late spring instead or when the lady birds are active.

Don't use pesticides in your garden, and hey presto! Ladybirds will soon come of their own accord.
P.S. Ladybirds, for our American folk, are what you call Ladybugs.

well honey, its a bit late now but next year, make sure you get a lot of green fly, ladybirds love 'em to bits!
actually, i just thought, the greenfly love roses (they keep attacking mine!!) and just when i thought i'm fed up with spraying the roses, along came hordes of...ladybirds! munch, crunch munch...so, i think it started somewhere with the roses...which actually means, since roses are perennials, stock up on them now! there are so many different kinds, they're lovely too! really picturesque!

Have plenty of food for them, inorder words, bugs.
But there is a food that gardeners can put out for them when they have cleared your yard of bugs and they have nothing else to eat.
It can be found at natural garden sites on the internet.
