Some of these answers are just insane!!! Your grandson is 21,most people grow-up and move-out around 18. I agree with the other answerer who suggested "HELPING&SUPPORTING" your grandson during this time when he is going to be feeling unloved and alone for a brief second in time...but he will understand and love living on his own(by his own rules is a convincing argument to use with the youngers...they cant resist being their OWN boss!) Good Luck and Have A Great Day!

Be honest. But also be ready to lose him, either permanently or for a while. He may get mad and resent you and feel like you are abandoning him.

I'm assuming there is a good reason you want him out and not just because he is 21 and you think he should be out on his own. If he isn't a burden, helps around the house and is a responsible person then I don't see a reason to ask him to leave. But if he isn't any of those things then I can understand.

You: Darling i am so proud to have you as my grandson. You are a joy to be around. I want the best for you no matter what. That's why I want you to start living your life on your own. If you don't start now it will be much harder later. I am here to help. But you need to grow up. What ever I can do to help you prepare for this , please let me know.

If you can't have this type of dialog with him then there is likely a communication breakdown that you are going to have to work out first.

ok...there's a lot I don't know about this story already...but like others said you need to be straight with him. Is he paying rent? and helping with bills? If not ask him for help or he needs to move. Where's mom? This may be an avenue of communication. But in the end you need to spell it out that he needs to eventually go, so whats his plans...set a deadline, show him how to look for a place etc etc. Once you treat him like an Adult, he'll be forced to act like one. My suggestion if he just moved in with you..rather than his whole life...is to say something like "You've lived here for (time) and have/haven't helped with bills, but I like my privacy and you need to eventually get a place of your own. I need you to help pay these bills by next month, and then also start looking for a place, I'll help you look. " Then in a month or two set a deadline for moving out. -in the end don't let him drag it out. Start with casual conversations of what his future plans are work off that by telling him yours (which he'll notice don't include him living there). Good luck. P.S. There's no "right" way to do it...trust yourself a bit too...and don't be fearful of being firm...he needs to be an adult...even if he doesn't see that now.

Tell him it's time for him to take responsibility. Give him a time frame and support him moving out on his own or with someone else. Be supportive and don't just throw it at him. He will be angry and hurt but if you support him it may make the transition a little easier.

Tell him you ran out of money supporting his butt. Or you could do what the parents did in that movie with Matthew and Sarah Jessica Parker, Hire a women to fall in love with him he'll ask her to marry him then he'll have to move out. Put his stuff out side he'll get the hint.

Simply tell him you love him , and will always be there for him if he needs to talk about anything , but that he is now old enough to move out and that you want him to for his own good . Remember to let him know that it is not negotiable .

You yell to him "hey 21 year old grand son, come in here for a min" then when he is in the room look him square in the eye and say "you have to move out".

Now that you are old enough to vote, to drink, to sign contracts (etc) it is time for you to try your wings on your own and allow me to have my own space. I will always love you, but it is important for you to get your own life and space now by finding another place to live.
