I want to use some leaves that are in their fall colors and make some art pieces with them. I'm using Navy Blue mat board as the backing and I was wondering what the best glue would be for the actual leaves? I understand to use acid-free But I wanted to make sure that I wouldn't use something that could make the leaves "transparent" or have the colors bleed. any advice would be wonderful.

For the answer about the gesso? Would that keep the leaves preserved with their color?

I'm basically going to take them and break them into smaller pieces and do a mosaic type thing with them. Would the gesso give me enough time to place them where I want to?

from experience, Elmer's glue doesn't work, nor does white craft glue. what does work is using a clear gesso to adhere the leaves as well as cover them over so they don't flake off. it is hard to use leaves because of their tendency to want to decompose, hence the use of gesso or similar such layering over top the leaves. i wouldn't necessarily worry about the whole acid-free concept because art work made from leaves in such a way are not going to last long enough for acid to do much of anything.
