Well, you pretty much answered your own question. Society is scared of what they don't know. It's always been like that. In sociology there is something called the contact theory. If you didn't grow up around a certain culture like Mexicans, and all of a sudden a group of Mexican Americans moved into you neighborhood. In some places it might cause an uproar especially if the neighborhood is used to being all white or black , etc. Basically, the theory says that the more contact you have with different people the more acceptable you become of them. The same can be true with almost anything. Most of it is based on ignorance. I don't know if that helps any.

to acknowledge the unknown is to show humility but our society really teaches us to be proud and in control
