I think so. But only if it was socialism in it's true form. Not Communism.

First, socialism is not a form of government, it's an economic policy. So what you are asking is whether we would be better off with a socialist economic policy rather than capitalism, right?

Socialism and communisim will never beat capitalism. Capitalism provides incentives. You are free to change jobs, try new things, get ahead if you can, and keep (most of) the fruits of your labors. You can rise as high as you are willing to devote yourself to rising. Human nature is geared to this 'survival-of-the-fittest' sort of economic policy. I think our government strikes a fairly good balance. We also protect and support those less fortunate or less able. While many on this forum compain about how much we spend on social welfare programs, they are really only a small percentage of our budget.

I love America! My grandfather was a share-cropper, my father worked in a textile mill, and I'm a high-tech consultant. We've gone from poverty-level to middle class to prosperity in three generations. Only in America.

No. Capitalism is preferrable, but with checks and balances such as anti-trust laws already existing being enforced. Monoplies can and are occuring in the US right now. Wal-Mart has lowered it's prescription drug prices below cost in florida to try and drive out competition while putting a happy face on it. Jobs willl be lost and many replaced with lower paying ones.

Socialism is doomed to failure. Here is my problem with socialism: if I get everything the government decides I "need" where is my incentive to work for anything else? And why should the government be the ones to decide what I need? Aren't I perfectly capable of making my own decisions?

So, some work, some don't. Some work hard, some don't. Some want to get ahead, some don't. The government takes your wages and gives it to the don'ts. Sounds like a great system.

No. Socialism is just a theory that can never be successfull in real life because it does not take into account humans desires. Socialism assumes that everyone will work equally with no incentives. And greed is a trait that will always be in humans. People will not work hard if their is no personal gain in it for them.

Marx believed that persons could study to self-govern and government could finally grow to be out of date. yet i'm particular some answer regarding 'Kool-help' or 'Nazi' gets the thumbs up.

No - it inherently promotes laziness and, as such, would ruin our productivity and efficiency.

Personally, I believe in efficiency over equality so I would never want a socialist government.

Private industry is far more effective. As an example, I would much rather trust my life to a doctor that's highly trained and highly paid than to a state-paid doctor that's neither.

I just think the rich should have to try capitalism and EARN every dollar of their money, without "no-bid" contracts, without bribing politicians, as in Abramoff, this side of prison bars and pay every dollar of their taxes with a progressive tax structure.

NO!! We've got too much of it already. I don't want to be cared for from womb-to-tomb. It diminishes people to a state of dependancy, which will ultimately destroy this country. Best case scenario: We'll be a Third World country.

Hell no. What incentive is there to do good work in a socialist system. No matter how hard you try, you're still the same as everybody else. Doesn't seem very fair to me.
