Try to break up the reading over time if it is a required task. Meaning if you have 5 chapters for read for school read one and then take a break. Make clear beginning and end points and stick to them. It's the quickest way to get through a long assignment and retain everything. Also, if its to prep for a test, or just material you are not sure you are understanding or retaining. Take literally one minute and write everything you remember from that chapter, anything you have questions on, and any thoughts you might have. This will help for almost any class.
As far as reading for entertainment, if you don't like it, don't do it!

Get a book on a subject that you are interested in. Example, I like animals, so I read books about animals. Reading is good for you, you can gain lots of knowledge. If you absolutely HATE reading, then find some educational television shows to watch.

I let the phase pass. I'm usually reading something, but occasionally I go through a phase when I have no desire to read. It usually lasts no more than a month or two.

just pick up a story book with pictures and read only 10 min each nite before going to bed..do it for atleast 3 weeks without a break

If you don't want to read, then sing. Anything you don't want to do, there is always a replacement action.
I'm a saint, and so as you can probably guess I'm very holy and don't want to sin. So I replace sinning wth shining my shoes. Sometimes I meet nice girls and entertain them with my money and other things.

If you don't want to read, you'll probably never know the answer to most anything.
Reading is essential in every day life and you're only cheating yourself. What happens when you have a family? Is this the mind set you're going to pass on to your children??

try it , you might like it. when my nieces and nephews were little i use to read to them. one asked me why did i like to read so much. i told them because i could go anywhere in the world. i could be anyone in the world. and do anything in the world. in other words its a great escape.
by the way most of them love to read.
