Well maybe I'm naive, but I think of it as a sports term. The money shot is the shot that is a hard shot but a certain player can always make, especially when the points are super important (close game). So you could say Jordan's money shot was the fade away jumper or whatever.
Pro Athletes are generally thought of as overpaid, so a money shot is a shot that implies they are worth the money.
