I think it's way more complicated than that.

I am not saying circumstances don't play a part, but I do know people with every benefit who just aren't that nice. Maybe their good fortune is the problem...it makes them feel like they like are nobility or something. The appreciate nothing. In which case you are right...so I guess we should hope to have equal share of hard and good knocks? That would be the best circumstance? Not sure.

I believe there is a basic evil in people which is overshadowed by a desire to appear good in order to hurt people even more later.

Circumstances are everywhere, and i do think that the goodness is overshadowed by it, but some of that is your choice whether you let it or not. There is a church song that says circumstances come to make you stronger. "If it doesn't kill you, it olny makes you strong."

These "circumstances" are certainly derived out of modern day socialization and expectations. At the core though, is the inevitable survival mode. I think if life's basic needs are met, people really are "good" but any threat to those basics (health, water, shelter, food, etc) will make humans fight to survive. But ya, the modern day cisumstances such as nice things and such and capitalism force people to be "bad" when they may not be.

The universe is balanced - everything has a positive and negative component. Humans are a part of the universe, so they too have a balance of positive and negative components. So, yes, everyone has some basic goodness in them (excluding psychopaths - but even they must have some benefit to the universe) AND some basic 'badness' in them. The challenge in life is to appreciate and use both aspects of ourselves to fulfill some greater purpose.
Best wishes.

I think the original goodness is naivety. This naivety is the innate longings for peace and happiness but being overshadowed by pleasurable sensations.

The "overshadow" is in our own minds perhaps !
Just understand the situation, and we can also 'see' what (in the situation) prevents them from manifesting their true nature !

I think your word "goodness" and the other word "people" are synonomous; but, what are those?
If you have good, the only way it is good is because there is something "not-good," same goes for people (i.e. "not-people"). And you can find good and not-good in people as well as not-people.
They are just words, so what do you think you are really talking about? (this is not an answerable question).
