...so what if it were not the Chinese but somebody else?!? lol
Anyway, I see your point. What if weapons in general were not invented? Who knows? For sure murder pre-dates, and is independent, of the invention of weaponry. THink for a moment that the ancient Romans had no such technology, but still managed to excel in bloodthirst and violence.

However, I do think the world (its geographical borders and its advancement in technology) would have been different without these inventions. Perhaps the conquistadores would not have had the technological advantage of gunpowder when they conquered the American continent. Perhaps most bloody sieges would have endured a different fate. Perhaps Pearl Harbour and the bombing of Europe would not have taken place. Perhaps, without explosives, we could not dig into impregnable rock to dig our tunnels and quarry our minerals. Perhaps people like Napoleon and Nelson would have remained ordinary people instead of becoming household names.... who knows???

Let's not forget that the Chinese were mostly using gunpowder for fireworks, i.e., entertainment. It was the Europeans that used it for rifles and bombs. That's why the Boxer rebellion was such a total failure, since the Chinese still didn't have long range weapons that the Americans and British had.

You also assume, incorrectly, that only the Chinese could have invented gunpowder. I think that you'll find that inventions tend to occur simply because the level of technology exists to invent things.

Someone once asked Einstein, "What will be the next super weapon?" (Meaning after a nuclear war)

His answer, "Sticks and stones."

Humans are pretty nasty folks sometimes, and they'll find unique and creative ways to kill each other regardless of their resources. So I don't think the world would be that different.

Trust me, B - Knowing humans as I do? I'm dead certain sure they'd find some way to slaughter each other with the most modest of implements! Know what nunchakus were originally used for? Extracting grain!

Certainly I can think of macrobiotic gun control, pesticidal ammo and killer instinct spray for buggers, and blue lettuce in carrot crops to battle pests (pets).

The answers to your question have to be based on what you mean by " a different place".

They still had efficient ways of killing each other before gun powder.....a better question is, would the world be a better place if we were all for one and one for all......
