Does anyone have tips on how to create a functional herb garden that you can actually cook from. In Southern Mississippi, or in general, indoor or outdoor, how do you keep bugs from eating it, how to start, etc.?

I have a small minature herb garden that I keep on my kitchen windowsill. As it is inside, it is always in reach when I need it. No bugs, and as it is right above my sink, it's easy to keep it watered. This works as long as you dont want every herb in the world. I just keep the herbs I use on a regular basis, in my everyday cooking. If you want an outside garden, you can cover it with very fine netting to keep out some of the bugs, but it is almost imposible to keep them all out without using pesticides. You can buy starter plants in most nurseries. I got mine at Home Depot actually.

In the spring you can buy small pots at your favorite nursery and set them out. I have one section of my garden devoted to perennial herbs such as rosemary, sage, and bay. There are many others that you can buy and plant. It's lovely when you water them in summer and they release their scents into the air around you. Nurseries always have folks who can advise you about the best growing herbs for your area and the best way to care for them.
