OK boys and girls - i'm going to try to answer all your questions.

DOT ON THE FOREHEAD -
A red dot on the forehead is an auspicious sign of marriage and sanctity. It can still be worn by little girls as part of "fashion" nowadays. The best way to describe this is by giving this analogy - the same reason women wear blush on their cheeks or put lipstick on their lips or pierce their ears. Besides the religious significance, Indians/Hindus think that the Bindi (the real name for the "dot") makes a woman look beautiful. And I happen to agree.

WHY HINDUS DON'T EAT BEEF -
The cow is considered sacred due to the following reasons.
1. The cow was regarded as one’s mother as it sacrificed the milk meant for its calf and provided milk for the people. It is therefore a symbol of a 'mother' in India.

2. Back in the day, the cow was also kept at many Indian homes for its milk and the animal became a part of the family. Imagine eating your dog.

You asked for it...I AM slightly curious about the real significance of The Dot.
But a more important question is this: Are there any smart businessmen, doctors (scientists , in general) left in India? I sometimes suspect they (you!) are all here in the USA,
Also, like that of The Dot, I have some curiosity about the name Patel. Is it just a very ubiquitous surname in India not unlike Smith and Jones here or is it more of a title - Inkeeper, for example?

I know that bathing in the Ganges river is very important to Hindus, but is there any way the water can be cleaned up so that people don't get diseases from it? If so, why have they not done it, and if not, is there anyone working on the problem? I would like to know, because I'm concerned that people might be getting sick just because they are practicing their religion. It doesn't seem fair!

I'm probably asking a dumb question, but I have wondered about this for a while now. No offense to anyone is intended, please forgive my ignorance if I have offended.

I love Indian culture and especially the food. I guess I do wonder what's up with the Bollywood stuff and why they speak so loudly. Is Bollywood just a small part of Indian theater, or is it really big? And why is the volume of the normal speaking voice so loud, why project so much when speaking?

I am curious about how people are divided into classes based on the belief in reincarnation. Is it true that people of the brahman class really don't care about the people starving along the coast because they believe they did something wrong in a past life and are paying for it, or something?
