Richard Nixon was not officially impeached. He resigned from office before they had a chance to impeach him. It all started with the scandal at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C., where a bunch of idiots broke in and stole documents from the Democratic National Committee. Those "idiots" were later tied back to Nixon. From there, the whole thing snowballed and virtually everyone in Nixon's administration fell under scrutiny. Nixon was involved in all kinds of shenannigans like illegal wire tapping, spying on government officials, covert operations in Vietnam and elsewhere; the list goes on and on. If you want a somewhat entertaining history lesson about it, rent "All the President's Men" starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman from Blockbuster or Netflix or whatever.

P.S.: The "tapes" that you refer to were taped conversations between President Nixon and various members of his staff, including Vice President Spiro Agnew and Attorney General John Mitchell. The reason the tapes were such a big issue is the investigators discovered that large portions ot the tapes were missing after they were turned over.

P.P.S.: President Nixon passed away in his home in San Clemente, California in the early 1990's.

P.P.P.S.: Bill Clinton is the only American president who was ever impeached, but he was not voted out of office by the Senate. He was formally censured, but that was it.

Just a correction: Nixon was never impeached; Congress was moving ahead with the articles of impeachment when he resigned. Presidents that were impeached were Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.

The Watergate scandal involved a burglary at the Democratic Party's headquarters in the Watergate (an office/residential building in Washington). The burglary was planned by people from the Committee to Reelect the President (aka CREEP) so spy on the DNC. It does not seem like Nixon knew about the burglary beforehand, but he did participate in the attempt to cover up CREEP's involvement in it. Investigations (particularly by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein) revealed the involvement, as well as other illegal activities by Nixon and his staff. Several members of the administration and CREEP served jail time; Nixon was pardoned by his successor, Gerald Ford, and was thus never charged with a crime. Read the book below for a more thorough explanation.

The events leading to impeachment are as follows:
A break-in took place on 6/17/72; 5 burgulars went into the Democratic Nat'l Committe offices, inside the Watergate office complex. Investigations revealed that the burgulars were employed by the committee to re-elect Pres. Nixon. There were transcripts of 20 tapes revealed in 1974 which revealed Nixon discussing the Watergate including raising "hush $" to keep the burgulars quiet. This led Nixon to be impeached under 1. Obstruction of Justice, 2. Abuse of Power & 3. Contempt of Congress. In 8/9/74, Nixon RESIGNED & avoided the prospect of losing the impeachment vote. He thus became to only president to resign. He died I believe in 1992 or 94.

Nixon was never impeached. He WOULD have been impeached if he hadn't resigned. He wouldn't have resigned if the GOP congressmen hadn't told him they'd vote for impeachment and conviction if he didn't resign.

There have only been 2 impeached presidents - Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. In both cases, the Senate did not convict.

Impeachment is like a grand jury indictment. It means that evidence were presented on a charge or charges, and the House of Representatives votes on each charge. If any charge is voted in, then an impeachment has occurred.

After that, the charge is tried in the Senate. If the charge is upheld by the Senate, the president is removed from office. If the charge is denied by the Senate, then nothing happens.

Clinton was also impeached but not removed from office. The Watergate scandal was about some of Nixon's top aides having some offices of the democrats basically burglarized to find information. The tape recordings indicated Nixon as well as some of his top men. Some of which did prison time for it. Nixon did resign over this.

Nixon resigned because he was facing impeachment. Nixon was a president who realized that impeachment proceeding would take the governments attention away from what it is supposed to be doing. Unlike some less scrupulous presidents that have been impeached, like our last one.

Watergate was a scandal where the Republican National Convention was spying on the Democratic National Convention. They were caught when Forrest Gump saw flashlights in the building next door.

Nixon is in fact, dead. I'm pretty sure his dog, Checkers, is too.

Nixon, a republican, was involved in covering up a covert operation in which the Democratic Headquarters offices (located in the Watergate building in Washington) was broken into and files removed. It was mostly because of his overt covering up of information about this action that he was in the process of impeached. You will get more information from other answers. Nixon resigned and left office whereas Clinton, who was impeached as well, did not.
They are not the only two presidents impeached while in office.

Impeachment is one thing. Conviction is another. Nixon isn't the only impeached president.

U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 4:

"The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors."
