kimmy - please, do me a favour, ignore the guy who's scaremongering and saying that you have a trojan on your machine. I admit its possible, but this is BT Broadband we are talking about here...

I'm on BT broadband, I installed my Dad's, my Sister's and my cousin's...and they all have the same problem as you. Its nothing to do with viruses, its to do with the crappy free modems that BT send out.

Let me guess, you have a "BT Voyager" don't you? :)

They are notoriously bad at dropping the connection. You have two options, one free and is painless but slow, and one that will cost you but will have a better long term effect:

1. every time it does this turn off your modem for a few seconds, (switch is at the back on the left) turn it back on and reconnect...or if you are using the old BT Voyager without the switch on the back, pull out the USB cable (likely to be blue), wait a few moments, put it back in again and reconnect. This tends to get you back on and if you can live with the inconvenience its relatively painless (just a bit slow); OR

2. buy yourself a good quality ADSL modem - it won't cost you very much (no more than 20 quid for a top quality one) and you won't ever have this problem again I promise you. If you know anything about computers get an internal one and put it in your machine yourself - if not, just buy an external modem (a bit like your voyager) and replace the one you have...PC World and other places of a similar nature can advise you on which one is best.

I do recommend that before you do all of this though you go to :

and download AVG antivirus (free)...run it through just to be sure you're not infected. But in all honesty, I think you'll find its the modem.

We used to have the same sort of problem. We were originally with AOL on dial up. Thought it was something to do with dial up. Went to BT Broadband as we're too far from the exchange for anyone else to consider us. Problems carried on. After the second engineers visit and complete renewal of the phone wires to the house (with a new ADSL box and built in filters) the guy eventually cleared off down the road and said he fiddled with something in one of those green phone box things. Switched us to another line. Problem solved. In short, BT might even solve it for you. Might take a lot of phone calls though. We also ended up with a refund covering the period of poor service after the wife growled at BT (I'm too nice)..
