The difference is not so much in the characteristics of each, but in their respective place in the religion. In Buddhism, Mara may be a nuisance, but is really of little consequence. He does not matter in larger scheme of things. In Christianity, the devil, over time, has been given a very important role, with a great deal of power, almost rivaling that of God himself, especially in more Fundamental Chritian religions. I'm not as sure about Islam, but I believe his status (the devil) is similar to Christianity, but without as much power.

There's an academic who has written a 4-volume history of the idea of the devil, from antiquity to present times. His name is Jeffrey B. Russell. He condensed his series in one volume, entitled "The Prince of Darkness : radical evil and the power of good in history." The 4-volume history has a different name for the devil in each title (i.e., Lucifer, Satan, Mephistopheles, and the Devil). I would look through the nearest good university or college library to try and find the 4-volume series; I found the "Prince of Darkness" book in my own city's public library. Russell will give you all you need to know. As for resources on the Internet, I simply don't trust any source enough to be able to recommend anything in good conscience.

Mara, Lucifer, Shaitan and what not, they all are the same energy with different hats, that's all. You play with one, you play with another.
As a contrast Hinduism has no such thing as the devil, as it believes that brightness or darkness, it all resides within us. So it is what we seek, because that is what we ultimately find in us and around ourselves.
And then add to it the Karmic Principle - What you sow is what you reap, which leaves us with no one to blame our wrong choices and misjudgments on. As always with early responsibility comes early redemption too.
Knowing that it is only our own unwillingness to listen to our inner guidance that plunges in deep darkness which we then call hell and its people devils, while reality it really is absence of light and light is the only cure for it, its only exit.

In Hinduism the thought of devil or devil isn't suggested. God is ALL it is and ALL that may no longer. he's Omnipresent, all-powerful & Omniscient. So each and every thing in the international we see is hooked as much as God. God is in the profound and the profane. If we are saying that God does not exist is that ingredient, place or man or woman. It means that we are no longer speaking approximately God. because of the fact God is everywhere. yet the place ever we see absence of God, we call it devil or devil. devil is the guy made concept to maintain himself in verify from going off course.

I believe that the "Devil" or "Satan" is a word to describe the dark spirits of the unearthly plane. Bad entities will never get to join in the light. They will experience eternal death. They are the ones who will to keep coming back to this earth and try over and over until they get it right. Hell is right here. We are living in Hell, right here on this planet. When we are able to learn from having to come back, over and over, then we will be able to go into the light and not have to return here. When we are done with our learning and learning to love and helping those who are still here, we have the option to retire our loving souls and throw them into the big pool of love and light which I believe is my interpretation of GOD. My higher power is all of those who have learned and loved. The Devil is just a name for the pool of the dark entities who will keep inhabiting this planet for eternity. Hell and Satan is right here and always has been. There are different name tags put to it, but it is a collective name to cover those who need to keep coming back until they get it right.

I don't know much about Mara, but Lucifer was the general of the Lord's army and then he fell and became lord of Hell. As far as the whole embodiment of evil thing they're probably alike.
