It may be overheating - unplugging it gives it a chance to cool off. Does the error come back after the recorder has been on for a period of time? Locate your recorder as recommend in the users manual - with minimum distances to the side & back for the unit so it has sufficient ventilation.

I had similiar problems with my comcast motorola PVR.

DVD recorders are fussy things.. my Philips DVD70 (£279) did the same thing.. you have to make sure the discs you use are spotless and stick to quality makes such as tdk,Sony,memorex..
it eventually got so bad, 'disc-error' on almost every disc!
i got Philips to check it and they found a software problem.... you have two choices:
1: download the relevant software upgrade from jvc....
2: put it down to a bad experience and get a LG one(£150), which i did and have had NO problems what-so-ever with it.. much better...
