if God didn't approve, why would he make us? are you telling me God has made a mistake? this is my point! your only argument is religion! don't give an argument based on faith. Marriage is special to us because we WILL fight for it! All the homophobes will soon be the minority.

The problem WE are facing is NOT the US in general..In fact, all straights that I know (I know a lot of them, unfortunately, I only associate with Straights in social AND business settings, all know I am gay, and couldn't care less. These same straights do NOT understand why we are denied equal rights.
The answer doesn't lie in the present Administration who is in the grip of the lunatic fringes of Fundamentalism...the answer lies in a clean sweep of the Republican party from the Senate and Congress....I actually think that if the Dems gain control, there just may be empeachment proceedings, and that is what we need. IT isn't just the Gays who are denied equal rights, it is Blacks, Latinos, American Indians..for what...a few idiots who reside in Virginia! Bush listens to no one, so it is time to shove his deaf ear back to Texas. California is a huge state, and those here are now ...finally...listening to reason.
WE CAN cause a change ONLY by going out, getting ALL our friends to actually get off their complacent butts and get to the polls. We have only ourselves to blame, for Gays are notorious about whining AFTER the election that they didn't bother to vote in..this is about as sad as it comes. We deserve better, and the only way to get the better is to VOTE the butt heads out of office. That is the only thing they listen to...well, that and money. IT is TIME that Gays start a revolution. The Blacks and Hispanics will join, even though we make seriously strange bed mates. And, if it comes to it, a TAX revolution is in the offing! The national debt of 4Trillion has finally caught everyones attention EXCEPT Bush/Cheny/Rice...these three need to be horse whipped, tied to a fence in Texas and done to what Texans have done to Gays. I, for one, am not turning the other cheek any longer...(well, I never did, but that is another story). YOU have always been a ray of light here, always the sensible voice of reason. Use your talents to get up a movement...I have already joined, and intend to push this to the limits. I will no longer be dictated to by idiots in Washinton. And until we have some sanity back in that town, I am going to raise as much hell as I can..and that is NOT here amoung fellow people who are like minded, for that does NO good...you cannot preach to the choir and expect change. IT must be to those fence riders who have been hornswaggled by the Chritian minority who seem to be pulling all the strings.
I won't be seeing much of you here, for I actually have a life, as you do. But, PLEASE email me ...I, for one, have one that actually works. Look forward to hearing from you, Phil

For your paper: The rich pay about 90% of all taxes in the US.
The rich include a disproportionate number of Gays who have not blown their money on big screen TV's.
The Gays consist of about 10-12% of the population, but about 25% of impluse buying is done by gays because of larger disposable incomes than straights who are strapped with a family to raise and, in some cases, educate.
The Gays have a higher percentage of college education than thier 10-12% would indicate, therefore have higher than expected paying jobs. High paying jobs cause high taxes, disproportionately born by Gays. Gays pay the same taxes as all others in their income, but have NO deductions to support marriage, an institution that has outlived its usefulness. Marriage provides NO security, yet we, as a Nation, subsidize this archaic institution. Passing stronger laws to protect children is fine..make sure the support payments are made one way or another, but ...Gays pay a lot of money for those same children to be schooled, yet few of them have children. We are NOT represented in legal terms of survivorship unless we take extraordinary steps to insure that our life partner cannot be ripped off by families who have disowned us, ignore us, and in general, do not approve of us. Yes, there are ways to remedy the situation, but the remedies must come from both sides of the fence...discontinue the advantages of being married, AND make sure that inheritance is iron clad, hospitilizaton and final decisions cannot be broken by non-adoring parents and relatives who's agenda is always, "what's in it for me."

First of all, don't come out blasting the religious fundies, they will feel attacked and get defensive right away- a well worded and rational argument goes much farther than just blurting out that the bible is wrong.

Anyhow, if you do want to examine the validity of the bible, look up all the other crazy sh1t it says (like all adulterers should be stoned to death and a woman who gets raped and doesn't report it should be stoned top death and stuff) and how the only laws G_d put forth were the 10 commandments and through Jesus the Golden Rule, and they don't talk about being gay being wrong.

Besides that, I think it would be good to also discuss the separation of church and state in the marriage debate- how can we bring in the bible i.e. a religion, into decisions about the legally recognized marriage?

I really don't think there has to be an argument over weather two people can get married regardless of gender, if this is the lifestyle you chose to live then so be it it's not a problem for me, my question would be the word marriage and the motive you have behind it, are you marrying just so you can receive the benefits of a spouse if so then I do not think there will be a government out there that will grant that right, right now in Canada it is a little relaxed but Mr Harper is about to change all that by securing a safety net for all religions that are against gay marriage, I do not think the future will hold much positive reaction for you but good luck any way.

I have had to do some legal research on this and I highly recommend taking a look at two different cases: "Goodridge v. Department of Health" (Massachusetts case from 2003) and "Loving v. Virginia" (Supreme Court case from 1967). The first one legalized gay marriage, the second one struck down laws forbidding marriage between white people and black people. What's striking in Loving is the part of the lower court's opinion that the Supreme Court refers to, declaring that separation of the races is God's will. You are already aware that "God's will" is frequently invoked in the gay marriage debate. (They seem to forget that we live in a democracy and not a theocracy.) Take a look at Goodridge and Loving and you should have some good material.

I believe you're right that the anti-gay marriage stance is based largely on personal prejudices. People make slippery slope arguments ("How do we stop people from marrying pets?" "What next, my sister and I can get married?") without realizing that those examples can readily be distinguished from gay marriage. Marriage is a contract, requiring the consent of both parties and animals cannot give consent -- even if they could, however, we have no way of ascertaining it. So that takes care of "man-on-dog" objections. As for incest, there are strong policy reasons (strain on familial relationships and negative consequences of inbreeding). These problems don't arise within the context of a same-sex marriage.

People also make the "what about the kids?" objection. They might be subjected to teasing because of their parents, but this isn't significantly different from the ostracism that children of mixed-race couples had to endure. We certainly wouldn't find it permissible to ban interracial marriages just because other people have a problem with it, would we? And even if, as some contend, a household with one mom and one dad is the "best" environment for a child to be raised in, having a "best" option doesn't necessarily mean you have to close yourself off to other options. Harvard might be the best university in America, but that's no reason to forbid people from applying to UCLA.

You should also check out some relevant essays by Andrew Sullivan, if you have time. He's a conservative in favor of gay marriage.

Ignore the haters. Writing about something you feel passionate about is a great idea and usually results in great writing. Start by getting all your feelings out - just brainstorm - write write write, like you have here with this question, but expand it a bit. Just let your pen go and think about all the different aspects of your topic. This will give you some good ideas of sub-points for your argument paper. You can clean up the ideas later on, toss out what you don't need, and polish up the good stuff into a nice paper.

I am not gay but I am an avid supporter of gay marriage and I have done a lot of research on this. I am a Christian and member of a conservative Christian church, and I'm an advocate for church policies welcoming gay people. I'm also a professional editor. All this is to say if you would like some more targeted help with your paper, feel free to email me. I won't write it for you, as much as I'd like to, but I can help you come up with some ideas.

Good luck!

I appreciate your efforts to write about this topic, but what the hell is the question? If it's "is this not like racism?", then the answer is yes. It is the samething. I also believe that blacks weren't allowed to marry whites as well. I'm not sure about that though, but I wouldn't put it be surprised either way. Some people are just blind fools who try to lead the other blind fools. As far as that goes, the question is: "Who's the bigger fool, the blind leader or the blind followers?" They think they know everything, but they only know what they heard. Either way, I dont' bother much with these people anymore. They're a waste of time. All those bible thumpers and homophobes, that's all they are.

I think this is a great point... Also bring up the rest of everything... Like taxes, health insurance, We do not get the same benefits as str8ght people but we all pay the same taxes as a single person? makes no since... Why must we check a single box if we are not? Why does the box not say something different.... See its not just about marriage its about equality for all.. We are here as citizens and yet we don't benefit financially as str8ght people do, so why should we pay the same taxes? Why is our health insurance so high when we cant get a family discount???

Most of the religious people use GOD forbids it as stated in the bible. First there are many things that the bible states, that a lot of them ignore. They pick and chose and twist the bible to their advantage. Fact is the bible was written and translated by men. men make mistakes and allow their prejudicial views guide them.

Second, the US government was founded from religious persecution. Many religions now would allow gays to be married, yet they are now being told they can't do it legally. Is this not suppression of freedoms of religion?

There is a clear division between church and state, yet the republican continue to allow one church to rule this country. They forget about Hindu, Buddhist, and other religions that reside here. There fore the religious agreement in itself is null.

It should be legal,. It would allow million to gain health benefits through their partners. It would allow millions to adopt and raise healthy loving children. It would do so much good.

It is ridiculous! this kind of irrational hatred is just as bad as racism! I'm so sick of the "fake" Christians using religion to justify their bigotry. as I've said (and others, too) before, God created and loves us all...and He makes no mistakes! If God didn't create homosexuals, there wouldn't be any! Love is love! why shouldn't 2 people in a loving, committed relationship be denied the same rights as anyone else? there used to be laws on the books against interracial marriages...and people eventually saw how wrong and out-dated that prejudice law was!
one day, we WILL be able to get married!

For your paper, you might want to consider the Virigina law that was struck down by the Supreme Court regarding inter-racial marraiges. There are many parallels that can be drawn. Discrimination based upon the race (or sex) of the partner is prohibited by the 14th amendment.

I tend to find the legal arguments more interesting than all the social arguments. The law is less emotional and less likely to be supported by arguments like "cuz it is just sick" or "god created adam and eve, not adam and steve"

Well just take the stance that it's a legal issue, not religious. Just like marriage is.
It is a legal right afforded to some but not others. That's no different than slavery or telling Women that they can't vote.
In civilized countries, same-sex marriage is legal. When do you think the US will follow suit?
