My house is 80 years old and the floors are super squeaky and annoying!

PS. We've tried shims in the basment...

Youu might have to just re-do them, but if you don't want to go that far yet, try just nailing them down more. It might help...

There are 3 things that will work. Wait until the dead of winter, and open all of your windows and doors, let it get really cold inside, then sprinkle talc powder (already mentioned and a great idea) all over the floor. Then close it back up and bring it back up to temp. When the cold hits it the boards they will shrink enough for the talc to get deep down in between the boards, since they are 80 years old they are not tongue and groove. The second thing to try is predrilling and screwing each board from underneath. Thirdly, you can just run a dehumidifier all year long. Since the boards are not tongue and groove they will move up and down against each other creating the squeaks, stopping the movement, lubrication, or drying the wood to shrink it some so that it will not rub are your only choices. gee, my house is 90 years, and has all those squeeks too, but I have resigned my self to the fact that it is just part of the charm. My husband is a carpenter, and has tried all sorts of things, but so far nothing has helped. Just look at it this way, you always know where someone is...

Try a little talcum powder right on the squeeky spots. It should make the
boards slide more quietly.

try drilling a hole where it squeeks and setting a ring-nail into the joist then use alittle putty over the hole

add more blocking in between the floor joists and nail it in really solid.

you might need to renail some of your floor joices. also some of the floor boards.

Renail the floorboard.... just make sure you know what you are doing... you wouldn't want to make it any worse.
