yes it is a joke. because if it was true then more than 3/4 of the world would be blind. :D

It's a religious way to impose a restriction on people so that they wouldn't do it.
Other religions have things like if you spill your seed worthlessly, you'll go to hell. Others yet have things like the only way for a man to be touched sexually is by a woman (and not his own hand) and so on.
I'm not blind yet. I might go blind watching all the porn but that's a different story. so enjoy and don't worry about it.

Old wives tale to stop dudes from wanking. Stems from the religious front. Personally I see fine, though I should've been blind a long time ago.
