Ok , I bought a toyota rav4 1998 with 175 000 kilometres on it from the Toyota Dealership 1 yr and 1 month ago. We never got but a month guarantee because it was over 5 yrs old and and had more than 170 000 kl on it. we didnt get and extended guarantee. So the story goes, we now have 200 200 kl and the timing chain and water pump went. Wasn't the Dealership responsible to make sure that the vehicule was upto date on its maintenance before we drove it home? Should they have maybe mentioned something about this, as this timingbelt thing seems to be pretty general for all toyotas, and they need replacing before 150 000 clicks.

Most dealerships sell used cars with whatever manufacturer's warranty remains or as-is.
It's the responsibility of the buyer to have it checked out by a mechanic. I usually have a used car checked even before buying it. You never know how the previous owner cared for it.

If you got an extra 25,200 K on the car. It had been serviced and found to be OK. It's not the responsibility of the dealer ship to make the car get more miles than it's capable of.
Maintaining the vehicle is your responsibility.
It was a used car with lots of miles on it.
I know you don't like hearing this, but it's the truth. Sorry

This is where you made the mistake, you didn't get an extended warranty. you didn't ask for the maintenance history, you didn't have the dealer give you a written statement of repairs they did, as well as what they inspected after they received the vehicle and before they put it up for sale. Timing belts need to be changed every 60,000 miles, I don't have a conversion to Km.

These items are your responsibility after there warranty is up. If the dealership was supposed to make sure the car was up to date, you would of ended up with a new car. I'm sure you didn't spend that much money for a 7 year old car.

Are you nuts? You bought a used vehicle not a new one. No one warranties a used vehicle for general maintenance this was your responsibility. Also make up your mind if its a timing belt or timing chain because you cant have both.

Dealerships are supposed to check every vehicle for safety/problems ect... thats why they send them through an inspection before sold on a lot.

no its not their responsibility, you signed sealed and delivered the title when you bought it. especially if you been driving it for 13 months.
