Because we do not punish our criminals severely enough. Our jails are full of people who don't belong there. No one should go to jail for a non-violent crime. There should be other, cheaper punishments so that we could put more of the really bad guys behind bars for a long, long time.
Make other criminals pay huge fines to help finance the real jails. You can pay the fine over 30 years if necessary, but you must hold down a job and continue to pay.
When guns are taken away from law-abiding citizens, crime rates go through the roof, so getting rid of guns is not the answer. Only the good guys hand in their guns thus leaving them defenseless against the criminals. Stupid idea.

Compared to where? How much gun crime is there in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Nigeria, Liberia---Hmmmm Where else are they fighting? Some of those places it's not just guns. There are people blowing things up in Iraq and Afghanistan all over the place. Then there are places where they aren't fighting at all and there is a lot of gun crime. Phillipines, Indonesia, Somilia, and Mexico have a lot of armed assaults. Compared to those places the US and UK have almost no gun crime.
It's not guns that causes the problem. It's people. I'm 61 and have shot guns since I was about 8. I haven't commited a crime with a gun. Get the picture?

Because in most other countries, the 'gun crimes' are being committed by the goverment's military against the citizens, or by the rebel faction that opposes the government, or by the two factions that are fighting over what little infrastructure their years of warfare have left behind. If you think there is gun crime here, move to Darfur, Congo, or Nigeria. Or you can move to North Korea, I understand they have almost NO gun crime there.

There are several reasons for this:
1. Guns are readily available (legally in the US, illegally in the UK)
2. Young men feel brave and tough when they carry a gun. Peer respect is very important for young men.
3. We have had no large scale wars in the last 50 years. Wars test a young man's bravery and boldness. The absence of wars and conscription to the armed forces in particular, means that young men need to find new outlets for their natural aggression, and new ways of testing their bravery and boldness.
4. Social deprevation in some of our inner cities has reached such a low level in some (particularly black) communities, that crime is often (wrongly) perceived as the only way out.
5. Glorification of the gun culture by rappers. These "musicians" are role models - but fail to recognise the responsibility that accompanies role-model status.
6. Oneupmanship and natural insticts. Young men are always trying to show their peers that they are the "alpha male". If someone in your crowd has a gun - you need to get a bigger one or you won't get to mate with the most fertile females.
7. Guns are easily concealed and therefore more easy to take to a crime than (say) a baseball bat.

The gun crimes done in the UK are done of course by those who never turned in their guns when required to by the laws in the UK. Now only criminals, often drug dealers, have guns.
Gun crime in America is actually relatively LOW, by comparison to the number of guns believed to be in private hands, and again, violent crime is usually done by hardened criminals, although there are also instances of domestic violence, etc.

actually Knife crime is the most rampant in Britain at the moment and is on a higher scale to NEW YORK.
but gun crimes have been crazy in the past 3 weeks the "ghetto boyz" vs "pecknam boyz",the shootings in McDonald's brixton and loads more in Birmingham.
i think it's rampant because they are idle and STUPID and maybe that's all they know but that's not an excuse

Since the opening of the iron curtain borders, the collapse of the Soviet Union, guns are easily available from there, they sell them in street markets, easy. It seems the police have their hands tied when dealing with certain types, so they do not bother thus alleviating claims of racism. And so it will go on until someone says hit em hard and we will either deport them or lock them up, easy.

I'm not sure about the UK, but in the US, everyone is allowed to carry a gun, which means that they are readily available to buy and use without much consequence.
