According to Local Councils, they are installed only in known accident/speeding 'hotspots' and are mostly used as a 'visible deterent' to speeding drivers, so they would say it was in the interests of safety.
The fines are usually reduced if paid fast enough, so I can't see it being a huge profit making venture.
I would say the real money spinner for the government, as far as car travel is concerned, is fuel and road tax.

Well, I don't think you can state for a certainty that they only catch legirimate drivers.. I mean eventually they'll catch someone not legit.. But as far as whether the cameras are there to protect or make money, maybe a little of both. I would be lying if I said that it's only there to protect us. But it is a comfort that its there. Imagine having a child walk that same street. Isnt it a comfort that drivers who normally go that route go slower since they know there's a camera?

It's about money. The first company to make the things gave out the systems for free up front (at least they did in Scottsdale, AZ) in exchange for a percentage of the ticket revenue.

Arguably to sell safer driving, regrettably in the path of the common government implementation of concern. concern of a cost tag, concern of better coverage expenses, concern of loss of our precise, confident, I did say that dreaded word..precise TO stress. somewhat of charging those with a criminal offense basically while thier own habit particularly does result the actual protection or rights of yet somebody else, we've basically made it unlawful to do something that could endanger or result the rights of yet another, which makes dashing technically a concept crime, very like conspiracy to dedicate homicide. in case you're overheard asserting your going to shoot the president of usa of america, you're difficulty to arrest and conviction. on the different hand in case you're informed by using yet somebody else that they intend to kill you, you're predicted to handle it like a threat free parent of speach, and not allowed to take any steps to guard your self. those velocity cameras paintings kinda like that, there is not any protection against them, and you because of the fact the owner of the vehicle won't even have been working it while the incident got here approximately. besides that, the reality that all of us is being caught by using those cameras is info that they do no longer in actuality shop us safer, in the event that they did, no you may actually velocity the place they see a variety of of of the rather obtrusive cameras located. kinda makes them basically yet another fund raiser, and as we did no longer ask for or approve them, they seem to be a form of taxation without illustration.

Sure they don't catch murderers either, but they catch people who speed.
My advice, don't speed...cameras or not.
And how do you think those cameras get paid for

if drivers didn't violate the law they wouldn't get caught. The financial reward is a nice spin off
