I have a Linksys WAG54G router which is supposed to run at 54mbps, only recently, it has been running as low as 2mbps, is there a reason for this?

I have had it about 18 months now and It does get quite warm, will this affect performance?

Please dont laugh too much, but it appears that i had two connections from my laptop. I dont know how this is possible, but it seemed to be true.

I always wondered why there were two flashing monitors in the bottom right of the screen, one saying 54mbps, the other 2mbps. Its been there since the router was installed, so i just thought it was normal.

I checked the settings for the router and it showed the same two connections with different physical addresses!!!

I deleted one of them and it is running far better.

Thanks for your answers though.

Even though every piece of electronic equipment might start to lag because of heat, that really shouldn't be a really big concern unless something is burning or melting.
Check to make sure your connection is secure, also check for any new firmware/upgrades from Linksys website.
Another fix will be to run multiple Spyware/Virus software and make sure everything is running without any problems. Make sure your Internet Cache is empty.
And remember, when all other options have been exhausted, always unplug the router and plug back in after 10 secs.

move around the router and check the wires and reset it if it doesn't work also take the wires out and wait for a few minutes like about 2-3 minutes then plug the wires in

You should turn off your router every now and again. Leave it turned off for at least 30 seconds and then tunr back on again. Like computers, they can get confused. It is probably not the heat.

Check you signal strength on your laptop/desktop.

You may either have move closer to the antenna or move the antenna to higher position.
