Music--yes, even rock music--does help me when I'm working. It's not unusual for me to write papers and do school work while listening to music. It keeps me focused on my work instead of how unfun/unpleasant a task is. If I'm not listening to music my mind focuses on how boring and/or hard it is to be doing whatever I'm doing and starts thinking about all the things it would rather be doing instead! I suppose it depends on how well you can multi-task.

In my experience, no music helps me to concentrate better, as if there's music playing, at least part of my brain is listening to the music. I need quiet to concentrate. At the very least, music distracts you from focusing completely.

I can only concentrate fully with silence. I love to listen to the tunes, but they distract me if I'm doing quantum physics, so I keep it down while I'm working. While I'm doing housework, however, I have it up loud! :)
