I will answer this because I have, over a period years, had this as a part time job. Usually, the delivery fee is partially given to the driver. For example, a local company charges a $1.50 delivery fee. &75 cents goes to the driver to help offset maint. costs and fuel. The drivers are using their own vehicles, and this is an incentive the company includes in the cost of the pizza. TIPS on the other hand are not mandatory or included in the cost of your product. TIPS are to be earned, like in a restraunt, by treating customers in a warm and friendly manner ( I have had to survive using tips, and you would be amazed at how many people are willing to tip if you just express enthusiasm in your job and treat them with respect).

Yes.

A delivery charge does NOT constitute a tip, nor does it go to a driver! Nor does the driver want you to pay a delivery
charge! Back when pizzerias advertized 'free delivery', drivers were still paid an allowance to help pay fuel/maintenance
costs. The allowance paid was already 'built in' to the price of your order. Today the companies tack on a deceiving
'delivery charge', but its really just a price increase. This money goes into the pockets of store owners, and hurts
the drivers!

A driver will put ~ 70 - 180 miles a day on his personal vehicle. If it were cheaper for a company to provide their own
delivery vehicles to their drivers they would do it. Guess who is picking up the difference between the actual cost
of depreciation, repairs, and maintenance and the cost the business owners are willing to reimburse? Obviously the delivery charge doesn't cover the difference (even if the driver got the entire amount).

They rely on tips.

The "delivery charge" goes to the restaurant, not the delivery person.

Delivery people cannot subsist on whatever meager amounts they are paid by the restaurant. In most states in the USA it is actually legal for the restaurant to pay them way below minimum wage because "tipped food servers" are exempt from the minimum wage laws. They therefore depend on tips to keep a roof over their heads and feed their kids.

Don't be a Scrooge -- you should always consider a few dollars tip for the delivery person to just be part of the price of the food you order. No, its not "required"... but it is the responsible thing to do.

Any company offering food at a cost below what is required to make a profit and attaches a "delivery" fee, should be penalized. Set the cost of the food to include any "fees" the owner may need. Doing otherwise is completely unethical when they are asking the public to tip. Delivery fee should equal NO TIP. The driver can deliver for another place until this place learns fees are not ethical. I tip high with no fees - I tip none when fees are charged. If we all stick to this they will learn they can't stick it to us with "fees". Charging Fees wins my "What A Crock (of sh-it) Award.

I always tip the delivery guy. They earn so little and need to help them anyway. The owner gets the credit for the delivery fee.

You never have to tip the delivery person, that choice is entirely up to you. (It is a nice gesture if you do by the way - especially if you receive a piping hot pizza)

As for the delivery charge............that is something that is instituted by the Pizza Parlour, the large chains are supposed to use it to offset insurance costs for their drivers (US Labour Laws mandate that the employer is supposed to subsidize the driver's insurance, gas, etc - but some don't and the delivery kids are too stupid to go the library and find out their rights), some of the mom and pop shops just do it because everybody else does.

It's always a good idea to tip service personnel. You KNOW that pizza company isn't giving that deliver person a nickel of the delivery charge!!!

Shore, I always thought it was a little rude when people don't tip the pizza guy(or girl, But I haven't seen one delver to me yet.) I mean, their bringing you pizza, food, and happiness as soon as you open that card board box,you get a feeling, a warm sensation in your heart. It's a feeling you can only get from pizza, and we've all had that feeling before.
