gold fish put off a high ammonia level from their urine and it is a small tank so it does not take long for the ammonia to build up get rid of the gold fish and get some nice tetra's you will probably like them better.

hope this helps

Goldfish produce a lot of waste. So much that 10 gallons is recommended as minimum volume needed per goldfish.
Your 1 gallon is so small that the goldies wastes are building up in hours.
If you can smell it inagine how awful it is for the fish having to live & breath in it.
You need to be changing the water every day until you can get a large enough tank for the fish to live comfortably.
Once you have a large enough tank, a filter, which would need cycling to get a working biological colony, would make your life & that of the fishes easier.

1 goldfish is too small for a one gal tank, much less 2 of them. Need at least a 20 gal. Change the water more frequently, could use carbon in the filter to take out the smell, but really a larger tank would be much better/healthier for them, and the water.

I'm not to fond of goldfish because they are a dirtier fish and you have to clean their tanks out so much more often because of the dirt they leave behind.

Your tank is pretty small for goldfish and that is probably more then half of your problem right there. You can go to Walmart and get a pretty nice 10 gallon tank for like 20-30 bucks and your goldfish will be alot happier and so will you because you wont have to clean it alot like you do now .

I have palaties and I do about 50% water change every month or maybe every month and half depends on how the water looks and the testing I do .

Like I said a bigger tank will cure your problems

For goldfish, you may want to get a 10 gallon tank and put them in there. Then use your small tank for some small fish.

Keeping them in a small tank like that, its gonna always smell. A bigger tank and a bigger filter will do the job.

Feed them half of what you have been am and pm. Only change 20% of the water every three or four days. Your tank has beneficial bacteria growing in it and if you stress them by cleaning too much or giving them too much poop to deal with they will not be able to preform properly. You can also try switching to a more porous gravel (like a clay designed for plants. This will give them more surface area to grow in larger numbers.

You'd be better off buying a new fish tank...somewhere between 10-20 gallons. Until then you'd probably be better off doing water changes twice a week and feeding the fish once every other day.
Keep in mind their stomachs are as big as their eye (literally) so only a tiny amount of food is really needed.

I agree with the post about the urine and ammonia. I haven't had goldfish in a long time, but the same thing happened to me.

Also, somewhat unrelated, my guinea pig and my rabbit...They're cages have pine shavings at the bottom of their cages to cut down on the smell of urine. Their feces have no smell. It's the ammonia from the urine that really stinks up the room if I don't clean it often enough. And it's bad for them too. If they live in it, they inhale the ammonia fumes. Sometimes, the guinea pig will start coughing. It is harder to tell when his cage is dirty than the rabbits, but when he starts coughing, I know it's way over do for a box change. If you leave them in it, they can die from what they are inhaling, especially for such a little beast.

How big is the tank? Do you have a filter? Are your over-feeding the fish?

You have a choice. Get a bigger tank, 10 gallons minimun, or replace the goldfish with something cleaner, like a guppy, molly, or platy. And only feed them enough so they consume it ALL in 5-10 minutes.
