I read recently an article in the newspaper; one of these columnist who gives advice on computers - that it is possible to read an email without actually opening it (should you suspect a virus or don't want the sender to know you read the email)- it has something to do with right click - Has anyone heard of it - I don't know what I did with the clipping. Thanks!

i no with the newer version of yahoo it has a preview window which enables you to see your mail befor openi ng it i guess thats it

I think your columnist is probably referring to POP-based email -- that is, email that you read using a mail reader installed on your computer. The main ones are Microsoft Outlook, or Outlook Express.

That would not include web-based email like Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail.

For POP-based email:

1. Set your email reader so that you do NOT have a preview pane. That preview pane (or window) "opens" mail so you can get a virus just by seeing the email as a preview. Use Help to see how to turn off the preview pane.

2. Select the message listing you are interested in.

3. Follow the instructions in the Microsoft article listed below. It applies to Outlook Express. There is, no doubt, a similar way to do it in Outlook. You are looking for the message "source".

In some versions, right-clicking will give you a shortcut to View Source.

I suggest trying this with a "safe" message that you send to yourself.

Sorry I can't be more specific -- different versions of email readers do this function in different places.

The preview window *does* open the email as far as a virus is concerned. When in doubt, delete!

i haven't heard that. But you can read suspect email in quarantine.
