Saw a program once that talked about accents around the UK. Was really interesting. Lots of influences such as:
Immigration (influence of other accents)
Environment (pollution, temperature etc)

No I think it has to do with the location and how difficult it was to travel in the earlier days. Therefore people did not hear other accents and could not be influenced by it......

because peoples move from one country to another and then stop
their way of speaking is influenced by their original mother tongue
take new immigrants i can tell with my eyes shut an eastern block plumber from an indian or chinese one
