How do regional accents develop? Does it have anything to do with climate or the shape of the face?

Saw a program once that talked about accents around the UK. Was really interesting. Lots of influences such as:

Immigration (influence of other accents)
Environment (pollution, temperature etc)

No I think it has to do with the location and how difficult it was to travel in the earlier days. Therefore people did not hear other accents and could not be influenced by it......
