I found a beautiful project of pictures glued to the underside of a clear plate. Can a plate like that actually be used for eating and washing? What type of varnish should I use?
What type of varnish would be best for a food tray?

I saw how to make these on a craft show, Decorating with Style, years ago. Yes, the plates are okay to eat off, because the glue and sealer are on the UNDERSIDE of the plate. Once they are sealed, they are okay for handwashing only (no dishwasher). You can do this on cups, pitchers, etc., as long as it is on the opposite side of where the food will be.

I can't remember the type of sealant they used, I know they put two coats on. You can check out the old Decorating with Style craft shows on hgtv.com; but it might be easier to talk to someone at Michael's, they seem to have EVERYTHING in their stores!

If you do the decoupage using Beacon's Liquid Laminate and put a layer on the outside it will be sealed and can be carefully hand washed but the easier thing to do is use the decoupaged plate as a charger under a clear glass plate so the design can be seen but you don't have to worry about washing the hand decorated plate afterward. The Liquid Laminate works well for this type of project because is dries fast, completely clear, and adds very little bulk unlike decoupage mediums.

The pictures that are glued to the plate use a decoupage glue. It is made specifically for this type of craft. You seal the prints with at least 2 coats of the same clue. It acts as the sealer. I wouldn't recommend eating off the plates. Use them as a charger plate, with a clear, smaller, plate on top. The directions on the bottle of the decoupage glue will tell you all you need to know.

Believe they used decoupage for the glue to put the pattern on the back, not sure what they use to seal it though.

plates like these are used usually for decorative purposes only, and cleaned on the glass side with a damp cloth or duster.
not too sure of the type of varnish you would use though...a good craft shop should be able to help you.

You should ask at a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michael's. They'll know what the best product is to use.

Maybe you mean parsley. Or some of the fancy lettuces you find today.
