It's for a school project--the whole family is supposed to collaborate. I thought a mobile would be fun, but don't know how to make one (what materials do you use? how do you balance it?) Have you ever made one? Could you either explain how to go about it, or steer me to a good link where I can find out? My son is only 6, so it needs to be something fairly simple so that he can participate.

Thank you so much.

Do you have some wire--- the kind that you can cut with scissors? Or perhaps the kind of coat hangers that Joan Crawford detested?

You want to cut, straighten out a few of lengths of wire, no more than a foot each.

You also need to fashion things to hang from the wires with thread or dental floss---- Light things like cut outs of construction paper that you could decorate with crayon drawings or glitter.

Maybe you could brainstorm with your child to think of very light things to hang from the wires. All you need to do is balance them and that is something you can figure out as you go.

Hope that helps.... Well, perhaps you could do better with the help of someone like an artist, an artist with a website...

Get two paint stirrers and hot glue them together as a cross. Rig some fishing twine for it to hang from and from each of the ends. Use light objects from around the house or cut objects out of construction paper to hang from the ends. Have fun finding the objects in the house or yard. Maybe a leaf mobile?

How fun!
Grab a wire hanger.
Next, get some construction paper, glue, string, and a hole puncher. Gather crayons, glitter, paint, and some family photos or magazine pictures.
Decorate the construction paper, cut it into shapes, and then glue pictures on to the construction paper.
poke holes into the construction paper and tie a piece of string or yarn to one end. Do this for all the pictures.
Twist wire hanger into an abstract shape and tie all the pictures to different parts of the hanger.

Hi, It's really easy to do a simple mobile.
Start with two sticks, maybe about 12 inches long, cross one stick over the other in a X or + shape and secure them together in the middle with a teeny screw with a round top, a hook screw, it think its called.
At the 4 ends, you make a tiny hole and thread 4 separate strings, ribbons or nylon fishing threads about 1 ft long through each end and secure with lil knot.
This is where your son can join in, let him make some colourful cardboard cutouts of dinosaurs or fish or moons & stars e.t.c, make a small hole on top of the 4 figures, tie the ends of the strings through and voila! hang your mobile using the little hook screw on top of the sticks.

You could use "pipe cleaners", you know the fuzzy wires and twist them together to make your "base". Then use string obviously and make some little "Pom Pom" animals to hang or even just some little cut out pictures. You can get the pom pom animal kits at wal mart or most likely at any craft store.
I think this would make a cute mobile and would be simple enough for a child to make.

Have you thought about making a mobile about the planets? It is pretty simple. Get the Styrofoam balls of different sizes and then use coat hangers to put them together like the sizes of the planets.

Take a hanger. Cut different shapes out of construction paper, use yarn to hang the shapes after punching a hole. You can also make different vehicles to hang, or just anything.
