Hmm... from the answers so far, many people have been watching Twister... But here goes.
The center of a tornado is rather clean because the air pressure is VERY low, in fact close to a vacuum. Since there is little air there, there is no air to have anything suspended in. It is not calm however since all around there are winds raging from 50mph to over 261mph (F5 max). You ever use a salad spinner? Well it is like that, the salad is flung to the sides and the water blown out (centrifigal force). Everything within the tornado would be thrown to the swirling walls of air.
However, if you should find yourself in the vortex of a tornado, hold your breath and try to avoid the vortex wall that is coming at you. Tornado vortex walls have been proven to not be heathy for the human body.

cars, mailboxes, garbage(sometimes a garbage truck), grass. Other than that, it's just an extreme vacuum.
