I still cannot view any slideshows on myspace or videos on youtube and similar sites. They are all blank boxes with a little red X in the left hand corner. Any suggestions?

No, it is not. It's not a software, but a player to run and execute SWF files.
Try to restart your computer after installation. Download the latest IE version here: www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/

Might be listed as Micromedia Flash Player. the program should be listed in Add and Remove prorams in Control Panel. The program should have installed by itself.. it just allows you to to view web pages that are very advanced and interactive. Remember, you should always reboot after installing a program --- it allows (Windows) to use it correctly .

uninstall and just before you download it again turn off your "pop up " blocker then install
I had the same problem and this is what I was told to do
