My car is an automatic and whenever I shift it to DRIVE it does not respond. Two temporary solutions I've found are to switch back and forth between all gears, going back to DRIVE until it finally 'catches' and let's the car accelerate. The other one is that I move it to DRIVE and press on the gas really hard until it just jumps forward. What could be causing this?

The Trans mission is either bad. Or you need a good service done to it. The transmission fluid being low or the transmission filter being clogged sometimes causes that symptom. Before getting a new Transmission get the filter replaced and then get it flushed..
Buy a bottle of Lucas transmission fluid treatment. I've seen that stuff work miracles and get another 25,000 miles out of a trans mission that should have been replaced.
1 Check and make sure the fluid level is correct
2 Filter and pan gasket replaced
3 get trans flushed. It will remove all the fluid in the system. Trans pan. cooler, lines, and torque converter.
3 Put in a bottle of Lucas transmission treatment.
If that doesn't work. Replace transmission!

Like you said -- the gears are not engaging so pressing on the gas really hard should not make a difference. If it finally goes into gear after switching back and forth, the springs and levers are not working right. So it might be a problem more serious than transmission fluid.

Your automatic transmission may be worn out or have some problems. Be extra wary if this is a rebuilt transmission, often they don't work well as the original. If your car was used for towing, its transmission might really be too worn. Normally the shifts should engaged very smoothly without any hesitation or delay. Have your transmission checked by a reliable mechanic.

Unfortunatly you did not say what type of car you are driving, but normally all automatic cars use a kickback cble to shift the gearlinks between gears. from what i've read it seems as if your cars cable might be worn out, streched or not adjusted correctly. you will find the cable between your gearlever and the gearbox. chek if there is any play by moving it forward and backwards. one side should be threaded with a nut so you can adjust the play on the cable. if you cant take it to a garage.
