i once bought a car on auto trader in kent 32miles away. im in essex it was actually 98 miles

It is just to give you a time/distance reference. If I say it is only a mile away, "as the crow flies" you know that it won't take long to get there by car and that it is a short distance.

Crows supposedly fly in straight lines from one point to another. It is not always possible to do so by car. "as the crow flies" refers to the length of a straight line between two points.

They are sayin if you were to take a map and go from point A to point B in a staight line.
Meaning no curves and turns which is of coarse longer.

i think it goes back to the time before transport it was quicker to walk the way the crows fly

I think the term pre-dates cars.

Crows were observed to usually fly in straight lines.
