It's hard to say as there are so many good materials out there. Silk is a very good lightweight insulator and wool is awesome as it retains it's insulating properties when wet. Many companies use very similar "Advanced Materials" that are designed to wick away moisture. Moisture is the enemy whether it be a cold day or a warm day. A good long underwear will allow the moisture to pass through it with out getting wet (that's what wicking means).

Whatever you do, avoid cotton. Cotton looses 80% of it's insulating properties when wet and it does not wick, it absorbs water.

Producers of long underwear that I like are Patagonia, Mt Hardwear, The North Face, Under Armor and Medalist.

pvc starts to stink very quickly and takes a lot of the ease of wearing it. wool or merino wool is much better and can be washed. besides the aforementioned smartwool products i can recommend icebreaker products from new zealand. have some from them and they work perfect!

Merino wool. I've used them all and I like Smartwool products the best. Whatever you do, don't buy cotton!
