There is no legal requirement to keep an application on file. They can toss it the day they get it.

They legally don't have to keep them, but some companies may keep your application on file for 90 days to 6 months for review if they think that maybe they might have an opening for you during that time that they think that you might be interested in.

That's not a legal issue, as there's no laws stating they have to keep it at all. They can shred it the minute you walk out the door if they choose.
