Ok some hints. I live in Scotland, I'm a practical type of guy (not a boy racer). The car can do between 40-50mpg out of town. How's that for know?

Must be
Vauxhall Astra
because these are jolly good cars, that go and on and on, very practical, you can get loads in the boot, and I had one which I wish I'd never got rid of, never gave any trouble, but the body styling - oh dear, yes how boring can you get, will Vauxhall ever innovate? Not likely
and
the next model up is the taxi driver's Vectra.

Moris Marina, 1.4 GL in Orange with a tan vinyl interior and an optional AM (only) radio. One of your tyres has a slow puncture and you have a coat hanger ariel, your rear screen demister only has a couple of bars working at this stage and parts are tricky to come by.
