This is an ackward question, however I can give you 2 very simplified answers. 1. Being smart has so many advantages it is not even logical to type them all out. Endless possibilities, you can learn how to do anything, work anywhere and in any field. You have the ability to understand whatever is thrown at you or learn from your mistakes. 2. On the other hand, although I disagree that anyone can be dumb (just a slower learner), being less intelligent provides a level of social ambiguity. You can be oblivious to your surroundings providing a sort of eternal bliss. There are no worries about politics, economics or social issues because "dumb" people cant or choose not to understand them.

Well thats my opinion at least, although I completely disagree that there is a social distinction between smart and dumb, unless there is a physical disorder.

Hard to say, because there's a big difference between intelligence and wisdom, plus you also have to factor in common sense. I've met Ph.D's who are brilliant in their fields but completely CLUELESS when it comes to common sense -- these guys need to be down on their knees thanking their wives for dressing them every day. On the other hand, I have also known people who only had an 8th grade education but started their own businesses and made millions. The advantages of being intelligent are obvious, but the biggest downside is the level of arrogance displayed by people of above-average intelligence (who do you know that likes a know-it-all?). And there IS some truth to the old saying "ignorance is bliss," but our society has taught people that they are entitled to have everything they want regardless of whether they've earned it or not, so those who are less intelligent and have lower-paying jobs as a result think they should still be able to get whatever they want RIGHT NOW, so they usually end up in credit trouble. See, there's good and bad sides to everything, so you can't really say one is better than the other...

I think it's a draw... The smarter people tend to also do the dumbest things. They say that the higher you climb, the farther you can fall. Well, when a normally smart person does something dumb, it's usually a whopper. And smarter people are so aware of all the risks and probablilties of failure that they stress themselves out.
Dumb people, though, generally live within their capabilities b/c they really aren't able to exceed them (unless they're really lucky), so they have less to lose. Unfortunately, they're also closer to hitting bottom all the time, but that generally improves their ability to know where bottom is, exactly.
Like I said, it's a draw.

I think that smart people have more personal problems in their life but end up much more sucessful. Dumb people are oblivious to what is happening around them and end up retiring in a trailer park with their monthly social security checks. I don't think that their individual happiness varies much and I would even say that dumb people are happier.

The smart people win, If your dumb I'm sorry to say that your not going to get to far in life, life is about living and learning, including making the most of your time and making wise decisions throughout your life.

I personally would reserve the word "dumb" for people who do stupid things when they should know better -- I wouldn't use it for ignorant people who perhaps have never had education or never had the opportunity to learn :)

And "smart" often gets misused also, there are a lot of people with college degrees who still aren't "smart," they do dumb things (see my description above), and make bad choices.

In general, being smart is an evolutionary advantage. It's why we humans evolved large brains that are *capable* of learning a lot and solving complex problems. People that learn how to learn, then spend their lives learning and applying knowledge, will always have an advantage over those who don't learn and don't want to. Stuck in the forest? If you've learned survival skills, you can survive and get out. Need to get a new job? If you've learned valuable skills that are in demand, it's no problem. Have serious family problems? If you've learned how to settle conflicts, it's a lot easier to deal with. You don't have to have a lot of book or school learning to be "smart," you just have to understand that learning of all kinds is useful, and always be curious and interested in learning new things your whole life.
People who don't learn stagnate, don't progress, and often don't know what choices to make in difficult situations, and that can get them in trouble or killed. Smart people make better choices.

"A content pig or a discontented Socrates" Those are the only two situations in life "A happy ignorant person ar an unhappy intelligent person" who knows the harsh reality of life. Intelligent people are there to invent things to make life more bearable. Stupid people are there to use them and not to think about it. So it is better to be stupid cause you are usually happier than your more intelligent brothers who have the ability to see how hard life really is.
