An atom or element is a substance which is irreducible by chemical means (this leaves out nuclear changes). You can break down K2O to 2K's and an O, so this would not qualify as an element. It would be a compound, which is a substance that cannot be broken down further by physical means but can still be broken down chemically. Since K is on the left side of the periodic table and O to the right, this would be an ionic compound. K has a +1 charge and O a -2, so it would take 2 K's to neutralize the charge on one O2- ion. Compounds and molecules (covalently bound elements) will have a charge of zero.

So all the substances you have asked about are compounds. P2O5 is a molecule (covalent- bonding of elements on same side of periodic table more likely to share electrons).
Water is H2O or more properly H+(OH-) , an ionic compound that can be broken down as such: 2H2O--> 2H2 + O2

Just test whatever substance to see if it can be broken down any further chemically to distinguish it between an element (or atom) and a molecule or ionic compound.

Ionic bonds= metal to non-metal
Covalent bonds= non-metal to non-metal

These are not true of every compound, but it is the general guideline. So:

K2O is an ionic compound
P2O5 is a molecule
water is a molecule

They are all compounds, just different types.

An element cannot be broken down physically or even chemically. (Unless we are talking about radioactivity, but that is a different ball game.)

Elements are the things you find on the periodic chart. If it is not on the periodic chart, it is not an element. Water is not an element for definitions of modern chemistry.

God is specially religions. faith is the automobile by potential of which we come to understand God. Your Christian chum is right, in the context of the Holy Scriptures of the Bible.
