I have a Gateway MX6438 w/ AMD Turion 64 and 1 gb RAM and 80 gb hard drive, and the 15" widescreen monitor. I got it for just under $700 in April. I do a lot of photo and art graphic processing, among other things, and it's been great for me.

Something similar would work well for you .... with one change if you can find it at a price you can afford, and that is, get an AMD Turion 64 x2 instead ... its the duo-core processor.
Make sure you have at least 1gb RAM.

A Mac would probably serve you best. If you prefer a PC, I would reccomend a heavy-built one, as oppose to a think laptop. With all the processing, the thinner ones are apt to overheat quickly.

Something like a Centrino 1.73, 1Gb Ram 80Gb Hard disk.

will set you back about 1000.

Dell, Sony and Toshiba are all good brands to look at.
Don't buy that fruity crap though, Apple are all marketing and junk.
