Drinking works for some people.
Or just do it, if you are good or passionate, they probably will not mind even if they are better than you.

I know this sounds simplistic, but I'd advise you to just go for it. It shouldn't matter, your level of expertise. SOMEONE thinks you are good enough, or you wouldn't be invited to play. When the music starts, find your "niche," pick up the changes and rhythym and jump in. Take it easy and don't attempt to lead until your turn comes around. If it doesn't feel right, the others will fill in the gap until you catch up.

My playing went through a lot of stages, from when I started strumming chords to being able to keep up with some pretty good players. But the biggest leap in my skill came after I hooked up with other players. The better players challenged me to learn new patterns, tougher fingerings and new music. They helped me along, and, in return, I turned then on to new songs from my library. I also got a chance to try out other instruments.

This group never went anywhere, professionally, but we all got tremendous satisfaction out of every jam session.

I play better, now. I have a larger repetoire and get a lot more enjoyment out of my instrument.

Don't pass up this opportunity. And, look for other similar-minded musicians.

Shyness to extent has a link with an inferiority complex and intimidation. Just adjust your attitude and begin to build your self esteem up. Know in the deepest part of your being that you are who you are suppose to be and that you are here for a purpose and a reason and know one else is created exactly like you. Just jam away and let yourself go!!!

I am the same way. I have a group of friends that always want to jam. I am pretty good at playing the guitar so they always want me to jam with them. Just take a deep breath, clear your mind, and just start playing whatever you feel like- and eventually you will feel less shy and just get over it. So, Good luck and keep up with the guitar playing.

The best way to overcome this is to just face your fears and do it. Message me for proof that I overcame it. I can talk you through it, the feeling if jamming with someone is so worth the discomfort you will feel at first.

Just think that some of the greatest players in the world are shy and insecure when they have to jam with others. It's something that after a while you feed on. I mean that nervous energy you get when you are scared s h i t less.
Just do it!!!!!!

You must get up and jam regardless of your feelings. Keep practicing. This is the only way. You're so lucky to have this opportunity. When you're in front of people, don't look at them, look over their heads. Another idea: just picture your audience naked, and you'll relax.

when a band i was in first started playing clubs i was so nervous. then i decided to try and act confident even though i wasn't... it worked like a charm and in fact, helped me to be more confident.
think of it as a character or persona you put on, a more confident version of you who thinks they are a rock star.
