Wow, some major Houston-bashing in the answers! Houston is diverse and spread out. I think it depends on where you're located- there are areas that seem deprived of unity and interest. On the other hand, MUCH of Houston is full of culture and soul- numerous festivals, cultural gatherings, ethnic integration... no one can deny Houston of that. The people who say that of Houston must not see much of it.

Houston is the example of urban sprawl.
Sure, there's just about everything you could want to do -- theaters, restaurants, sports, clubs, music, whatever. The only catch is that you have to drive an hour to get there.

There are almost no distinct neighborhoods, and it is impossible to live in Houston without a car. Most of the people you meet are not native to Houston, and if you were to ask for directions or recommendations, they couldn't help you out.

I love houston when I went to high school we always had culture days for each culture to display their heritage even organizations to help different cultures learn even more. I think those that say that dont get out very much and they dont really embrace all that houston has to offer. Houston is the fourth largest city in the world which means diversity is almost a must, so vistit and see for yourself I think its wonderful I have learned brazilian martial arts here, bellydancing, and all about eyebrow threading and all that right here in houston its cool here.

Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the United States. We have so many different cultures here and I can't believe that they say Houston has no Soul or Culture. They are out of their minds.

because people in Houston are too busy hating and blaming each other to get it all together. Always the hustle, the angle, the rip, never looking at ways to join together and utillize the vast resources of each other in a positive way. Cities seem to breed evil and hatred, too much hopelessness and loss. It's such a shame - Houston has such a varied culture the potential for greatness is vast.

I've lived in Houston all my life. I think it has alot to do with the mentality of the people...Texas itself is really "Southern-minded"....conservative and narrow minded. If you do some traveling you will see what I mean.

Michael, move there for about six months...then you'll understand completely.

There's an often cited quote about Houston: "There are no native Houstonians."
