A psychiatrist requires medical school. They are a medical doctor with a speciality in psychiatric problems. They are the only ones, therefore, who can prescribe medicine. A psychologist cannot. A psychologist, to practice as a counselling or clinical psychologist, generally requires a Ph.D., rarely one can work with a master's, usually during the licensure apprenticeship period. Psychologists, however, may do many things besides counselling. There are educational psychologists, school psychologists, ergonomic psychologists, social psychologists. The list goes on and on. It is a fascinating field with many options depending on what you are interested in.
