when i was swimming competitively i found that the best way to increase lung capacity was just regular breathing exercises. I would start by inhaling for 3 seconds and exhaling for 4. Do that for a few minutes. Then move up, inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 5. Again, do that for a few minutes, then move up to inhale 6, exhale 7 and etc. But make sure you are comfortable with the excersise you're on before moving up! Or else it is really hard, and you may get light headed! And also make sure you're counting evenly. Not like 1.....2.....3.4. Make sure you're counting at a good pace. I would always stick with 1 mississippi 2 mississippi 3 mississippi 4 mississippi and so on!! Good luck with that!!!

There are many ways to increase lung capacity:
As you said you can simply hold you breath (but don't hold it so long that you feel that you will faint any second)
You can also (as you said) swim 1 length of a 25 metre pool, if you can't then no worries, try again another day (again don't hold it too long)
Another thing which nearly all my couches said that I should do is swim crawl, but swim three strokes them breathe, then 4 strokes and breathe the 5 and then vice versa. Once you feel comfotable with this, you can try swim a whole length of crawl whithout breathing, you can also do the same with breaststroke.
Remember not to over do it, don't hold you breathe so long that you feel really uncomfotable, and when you do things like holding you breathe, then make sure there's someone with you, whatever you age (because some people tend to push themselves to the limit, and doing that for 'holding you breathe is a big no no).
Some people also say that yoga is a good way to increase your lung capacity.
Also don't smoke, if you don't-good :-)
look at this website, has a little more info:

Hope this helps,
Take care

To increase your lung power, you should try doing x-country running. This will increase your lung capacity level and will make your heart bigger and will be able to get more blood around the body. Also, try doing alot of sprint swimming every now and then to increase for a stronger breathing rate. Also, at home, try doing excercises of deep breathing. This can also help in reliving stress and tension. Try holding your breath exercises as well..only for about two reps starting off with of 40 seconds each. Inccrease this as you do it more often.

U could do stuff like, while swimming 100s, first 25, breathe every 3 strokes, 2nd 25, breathe every 5, then 3rd breathe every 7 or 9, and for the last one do every 3 again. I personally think doing underwaters works the best though
