Be sure your floor joists will support a tile floor without too much flex, as this will crack your grout. Cement backerboard can stiffen a mid-strength floor. Happy tiling.

No not necessary I used the concrete onto the plywood. I am not a professional but the floor has been down for four years and still in great shape- I used backerboard on the walls though because it was the bathroom

I've been doing tile for about 7 years now and the man who taught me said that you use backerboard in every application of tile unless you're going over old tile that is in good shape. The backerboard add support for the tile as well as acting as a water barrier.

It is not necessary. However, you can opt to install cement backer board to provide an extra measure of moisture resistance. - See more at: http://www.miconstruguia.com/en/installing-marble-tile/

If I didn't use backer board, I would lay concrete on wire mesh over tar paper first. I only do that if the floor is noticeably non-level.

if you are putting down large ceramic [10 12 inch] i would use backer board .because larger pieces do not flex with the floor .especially around the tub and toilet [if you are doing a bathroom]

the backer board keeps the grout from crackingwhen your floors settle, it's not necessary, but, is a good idea.
