Enough is enough. This is Britain. This is not an Islamic country. Native Britons do not have to adapt, we were born here. Come and live here if you want to, but realise that you don't get to pick and choose what you accept (such as free education, free healthcare, and quite possibly a nice free house from the council and benefits) without making some concessions too. Quite simply, immigrants should fit in to their host country, complete with customs and language. If this is not acceptable, live somewhere where your customs are preferable. The middle east perhaps. Time to put a pledge of allegiance into the immigration application, if that is not acceptable to would-be immigrants then the application is rejected out of hand.

Here we go again! We've offended the Muslims! How EASY that is!
What about native UK people being offended by a fanatical religion playing such a powerful, negative role in our everyday lives? We don't hear much about that, do we!?
We should stop being so concerned about the feelings of the minority, and concentrate more on the feelings of the majority.
Living in a free democracy does not mean anything goes, which is how Muslims tend to view their way of life in this country. They play too much on the 'human rights' front, and seem extremely selfish on what they conceive as being fair, which usually means fair for them at the expense of others - the majority.
If they continue to push their ways too hard, of course there will be a backlash. There is a breaking point at which enough-is-enough. This country is becoming a walk-over for the needs of religious fanatics.
While I agree that people should be allowed to wear what they like within common decency, there are of course cultural boundaries, which if crossed provokes negative reactions.
If Muslims wish to integrate into our society (which I very seriously doubt), they should take into account the effect of wearing a black veil will have on the majority, and just as we the majority must refrain from any such activities that offend the minorities, so should the minority refrain from such things as the majority may find offensive. Which is worse - offending the minority, or the majority?
If wearing a black veil is not part of their religion (which is true), we must ask; why do they wear them in this country? It seems that in many cases they are forced to from an early age by male Muslims, and by the time they grow older it seems natural to wear a veil.
I'm so tired of this country being forced to pander to the needs of the minority. Maybe this country is not the best place to live if you have such a fanatical religion and all that goes with it (?)
To Muslims I say - stop thinking of yourselves so much, and consider more the people of the country in which you live. You are very privileged to be able to live here in the first place!

there is nothing to be upset about it's his opinion and it's a free country so he can say what he likes. he just suggested it. he didn't say you have to. i do think sometimes some of them get to upset when people say something. every one should be able to voice their opinions and before you get angry i think you should look and see what you say about others. like when there was a protest with Muslims and some where saying to behead the person that said what they did. if someone said behead the women in the UK that wear veils that would be a different story. I'm not racist or any thing you just have to look at it from both sides and i don't think anyone should get upset it's a opinion you every one has their own you might not agree but people saying stuff you don't like is just part of a free country and it's better to talk about stuff instead of making it taboo because that way when it's made taboo when someone does talk about it then it become offencive. some people find it hard to connect if you don't see their face because you see their expressions and first impressions are formed from face value.

Nudists belief is that we shouldn't wear clothes. If a nude person was walking around a city centre they would get arrested in seconds for indecent exposure. Why should it be any different for muslims?
And if I went to a predominantly muslim country you sure wouldn't see me trundling round in a mini skirt - this would cause offence and probably get me arrested. This is exactly the same the way I find it offensive and actually quite frightening when I see women dressed in a full veil. How dare they come to this country and not accept and follow the culture of the UK I do not know?!
If you don't want to conform to the country's cultures and beliefs that you are in, go back to where you came from - and if that is Britain find a country which accepts your beliefs in dress.
I support Jack Straw all the way and I honestly hope that he has just got the ball rolling.

It is a question of security and integration. Freedom of speach is of course important (as is the ability to act freely), however that works both ways. People need to feel free to be safe. I would not accept somebody coming to see me at my work if I could not see their face. I could not see their face and would not know whether they were a man or a woman, or whether their face was threatening or not.
Also people who work in vulnerable position should not be subjected to an unseen assailant/ customer. We cannot wear balaclavas anywhere in public/ especially where people handle money etc. so why should there be an exception. To allow veils is in my opinion discrimination.
My religion is Moshtango, where our holy god told us we must wear balaclavas at all times, especially in banks or when paying with cash... Is this acceptable????
For integration reasons as well we should get rid of them (I am not even going to bother explaining this as it's obvious). However I believe that most muslim women would be keen to get rid of them and that they are purely imposed (whether through force or brainwashing).

Personally I take offence to the 'threatening' thing and the shouldnt be allowed because thats how they naturally dress, (I also dont like that Japan dresses up like western people) also I dont like the way everyone is meant to dress like the west!
But I also don tthink its wise for women to wear ful facial veils because no-one can tell who they are and this can be bad for people trying to sneak into a public place using their identity (to do something bad)

I think the reason we see the covering as a worrying statement of dress is that it is something worn by the more devout or some would say extremist practitioners of Islam.
I hope the women who wear the veil, wear it because they want to and not because their husbands, family or community make them. I have a feeling it has become so popular, to show us infidels a united Islamic front, Now there's a good name for a terror group!!..
We are becoming racists and I do care as it's not by nature.

This is like i want to go to Saudi Arabia and be without shirt in the street and still i complain because they are estranged, the difference is that i would be killed immediately and here they can do it, what they can't do is to force us to like it, simple as that, please people check this link here and you will see how they doesn't look happy at all because somebody wants to dress with the American flag.
so they came here cause they want and they are asking for right that they want to deny US in our own land...very funny...very Muslim, this is what upset us and tear us apart, not religion, the attitude of ask what they don't give.
Instead of forcing 38 million people to do what they want...wouldn't be more easy if they try to adapt and understand us?

We wouldn't allow ski masks or balaclavas for street gangs would we... Why should the muzzies have it so they can have a disguise and we cant. Isn't this Great Britain? Aren't they guests? If they give a sh*t about helping the Brits fight terrorism, they would understand & lower the veils to ease the social tension. But they dont...they think they own the place....and dont forget this....They believe that we (non-muslims) are worthless, as we were not created by their big fella! I think his name is Allan!

That's not what Jack Straw said. He merely asked the women to remove their veils when they met with him. Later, he clarified that when he meets someone face-to-face, he actually likes to see their face. It's not an altogether unreasonable request.
