DEF a RAT!!!! They can shoulder surf, play hand tag... they are like little dogs. They need play time every day out of their cage. Males are more laid back and females are a little more spunky, but can get tumors. They have to be the best pet ever!! They are sooo smart and you can teach them tricks. If you are thinking of getting one, make sure you reasearch about it first.

RATS!
Rats make the best rodent pet for a few reasons. First off they are the smartest of all of the rodents and can be tought to come to thier name. They can also learn other tricks such as sit up, climb up things, and jump over things. They are the one of the most affectionate rodents. Males enjoy sitting on your lap as you watch your favorite tv show, and females are happy just hanging out on your shoulder. Any rodent is a farly easy pet to take care of. All you have to do is keep food in thier bowl, water in thier bottle, clean their cage, and last but not least is give them plenty of love.
Some other types of pet rodents are.......
Mice
Gerbils
Hamsters
Degu's
Rabbits
Guienea Pigs

It all depends on the characteristics you are looking for. If you want a really social rodent that needs a lot of handling, a rat. If you're looking for one to cuddle with and fall asleep in your lap and run around a closed off room, a guinea pig. If you want one to mainly watch in their cage, a hamster or degu.

Seriously though, rats are very intelligent and make the most interesting pets. They are loyal because they're just that little bit too stupid to live independently and they do sometimes run into things. But in a very cute entertaining way. So get one. Actually no, get at least three cos they'll get bored - one of the drawbacks with an intelligent animal is that it won't be happy just running round a wheel all day...

Definately a guinea pig. I have been bit by gerbils, hamsters, mice and rats, but I have never been bit by a guinea pig. They are good with children and have about a 4-5 year life expetency. They do eat alot, about the same as a rabbit.
Hands down Guinea Pig!

A chinchilla. They're incredibly soft, sit up on their hind legs while eating and run to the front of the cage when you come by. They're curious, active, sweet and cute with large ears and a tail sort of like a squirrel's. If handled when born, they don't bite. Chins are nocturnal and just start waking up to eat and to play when you're getting home from work. They don't like to be cuddled, though, and poop constantly. They pee in one area of the cage where you can put a small potty.

I was talking about that with a vet tech at our old vets office. She's had all of them, she said the best one as a pet is a guinea pig. She said all the others rats, hamsters, gerbils, mice, all they wanted to do was escape, that was their main goal.
