Growing up I loved science museums, but I already knew I had a love for science when I was very young. It is hard for me to say which came first. do you think science museums can make a kid interested in science or do kids interested in science like science museums?

zeebya: they may keep a kid interested while he is there but will he really care once he goes home. I guess all kids are different.

Yes and No. I think museums help feed a interest in science and the world around a child, but I think a lot of it depends on the make-up of the child and the child's everyday environment. This includes parents, teachers, and other role models. I became interested in science because my father took the time to explain the beauty, the uniqueness, and the why of everything around me. He wasn't a scientist, but he appreciated the complexity and the simplicity of nature.

Yes, they do. Some kids start with an interest in science then go to the museum, others go to the museum then get interested in science. I know a lot of people who work in planetariums (myself included), and many have told me that they first became seriously interested in astronomy during their first trip to a planetarium as a kid. I personally cannot pinpoint any one experience that got me interested in science in general or astronomy specifically.
Even for a kid already interested in science, a museum can show them areas of science they never thought of before, or help a kid maintain his or her interest in science.

I think it really helps kids understand and get interested in science when they can actually get up close and personal with the scientific ideas and experiments themselves. I know at the Science and Industry Museum in Chicago, there are tons of hands-on things to do and learn. I know I got interested when I was there, especially the medical aspect of science. It was definitely exciting.

The Indianapolis Children's Museum is great for them. It's an interactive museum where the kids can do all kinds of experiments for themselves, and see different scientific principIes in action. I've gone in before and I've never seen a bored kid once.
